There Are Many Types of Massage Therapy. Which one is right for you?
Of all types of massage therapy,
Swedish Massage
is the most popular technique of massage in the modern Western World. Swedish Massage is a combination of systematic manipulation of muscles and tissues, active and passive stretching, and range of motions (when massage therapist moves your arms and legs in order to increase motion of the joints). Swedish Massage has
numerous benefits
, is very therapeutic, and extremely relaxing. And besides, it's one of my favorite. It is also a good solid foundation for any new massage therapist. Once you know the basics, you can sharpen your skills, and keep adding new techniques of massage.
No, I don’t know or practice all of these modalities, and I am sure there is more. Yet, I tried to compile the most common ones and I will be adding more information about each of them. So, check back often.
Those of us who love what we do never stop learning. So for my fellow massage therapists, I welcome your input.
Although each technique of massage influences all body tissues and systems as well as emotions, and energetic field, each type of therapy target specific system.
Muscular/Fascial and circulatory systems modalities are the most common ones. They usually are quite enjoyable, (could be painful, especially Clinical, Neuromascular, and trigger Point) give you good relief and use light to deep pressure applied to your muscles. So, how do choose specific type of massage? Think of you needs first. If you are an athlete and your muscles scream for release look for Sports Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, or Swedish Massage. If you had an injury that caused misalignment of your body, structural integration would be best. If you have burns and can’t be touched, energy modalities will help you heal.
However; the choice of massage therapist is even more important then a modality. When there is a right match of practitioner and a client, profound healing can take place. Most of massage therapists, who love what they do, never stop to learn and have training in several types of massage. They usually combine different types of massage therapy and customize treatment to the needs of their client.
